Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a dental care procedure that can remarkably change the patient’s damaged teeth. Bonding is a specialized composite resin filling that can be applied and placed both at the back teeth and at the front teeth. This procedure can restore damaged teeth by reshaping or repairing cracked or chipped teeth. Bonding is also done to fill in gaps and lighten teeth stains. Generally, dental bonding can result to cosmetic enhancement of teeth as it can cover any natural flaws by applying a thin coating of a plastic material on the front surface of your teeth.

Dental bonding procedures are classified based on the size of needed corrections. Bondings for small corrections are done in a single visit wherein the color-matched bond is filled and bonded to the teeth surface at once. Small correction bonding is only prescribed for small area and front teeth fillings.

For larger corrections, the patient is required to make two visits because the dentist needs to make a mold of patient’s tooth as the basis for tooth colored fillings which are separately created in dental laboratories. These fillings are typically made out of porcelain. The dentist will place a temporary filling on the affected tooth until the customized filling is ready to be permanently bonded on the patient’s next visit.

Bonding includes forming a synthesized resin which is like clay promptly onto the enamel of the teeth to be added or covered. These resins are available in several shades that can be matched and adjusted to your teeth. Dentist prepares the tooth to procure the material and depicts the surface so the material has more surface area to bond to then coats the tooth with a bonding liquid and shines a light on the tooth to set it. Putty like material is put on the tooth and formed to the suitable shape. Light is flashed on the tooth to harden the material. Then the resin is cut, perfectly sculpted and polished by the dentist. Dental bonding is a pain-free procedure and does not require use of any anesthesia.

This kind of filling can last up to seven years to eleven years. Dental bonding is an apportionment of a dental health plan so ask the dentist about it before having this procedure done.

Appearance is the major advantage of dental bonding over traditional fillings. Silver filling does not readily adhere to teeth so there is a need to remove entirely healthy tooth structure to keep a silver filling in place. The composites of dental bonding allow cosmetic dentist to eliminate only the decayed area of tooth because this material bond directly to the tooth and likewise provide additional support. Dental bonding does not cause any cracks or breakage to the surrounding teeth.

Dental bonding has no significant drawbacks aside from the longer time spent at the dentist because of somewhat lengthy procedure compared to ordinary fillings and the bond tends to be yellowish after several years when the patient is a smoker because the resin is made of porous material. The cost of bonding is also higher than traditional fillings because the materials used in this procedure are much more expensive.
