Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are exceptionally thin shell of porcelain that are attached or bonded on the front side of discolored, worn, damaged, or misaligned teeth. This is an alternative for expensive and invasive crown procedures to improve the teeth appearance. It can further enrich the shade, structure, and arrangement of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are also done to correct smile or to makeover a smile. With porcelain veneers, patients can have the smile of their dreams in a very short period of time. This should be considered by individuals having teeth that are permanent.

The process of attaching porcelain veneers consists of two steps: preparation of the teeth and bonding of the veneers. Throughout the first schedule, millimeter portions of enamel in front of tooth will be taken out to accommodate the veneers. While very little tooth reduction is done in most cases, there are certain situations where more tooth must be actually removed which increases the risk of trauma to the tooth. The amount of tooth to be removed for the veneers should be talk about with your cosmetic dentist ahead of time.
Structuring and color variations are discussed over by the dentist to the patient.

Often times, anesthetic are used to prevent discomfort. Teeth will be molded to create actual porcelain. During the next visit, where permanent porcelain has been created, it would be the appropriately fused to the teeth. Dental cement will then be applied after the teeth are cleaned chemically to permanently attach the veneers. Color cannot be altered once veneers are put in site.

Porcelain veneers being thin and having held in place by a strong bond means that very little provision is needed. It is also used to close small gaps when braces are not seemly. Unlike composite veneers, preserving is by far more complicated, resulting for the damaged veneer to be remade. One bright side, since they are customized outside mouth, color and figure can be controlled easily. Despite the fact that it is quite expensive, reaching from $900 to $2500 per tooth, porcelain veneer can go on for approximately 10-15 years. It is also impenetrable to stains and it is long-lasting.

Oral hygiene like brushing and flossing should be done on the daily basis with routine visits and dental cleaning to ensure the top condition of the porcelain veneers. Veneers are typically difficult to stain but it would be wise for patients to avoid food and liquid refreshments such as cherries and teas that are known to stain teeth. Veneers can be damaged, chipped or cracked from bruxism, gritting or grinding teeth. If the patient suffers from these tendencies he should talk and ask his cosmetic dentist about wearing a mouth guard at night to protect his veneers.

It takes approximately one to two weeks period of adjustment for the patient to get used to his teeth that have been changed in color, size, spacing and shape. It is natural to have some minor sensitivity after the teeth have been prepared for veneers and while wearing the temporary veneers. There are some patients than can experience difference in speech when pronouncing "s" and "f" sounds. This is corrected through minor adjustments that the cosmetic dentist can make to the veneers. Veneers are designed to look exactly like natural teeth, but it is common to notice very slight variations in the color of veneers upon very close inspection.
